It was so amazing to finally arrive in Dundee with
Elizabeth. It was a great relief to finally reap the
benefits of many months of preparation and have everything work so
smoothly.
My first of many adventures with UK culture was attempting to get
an Internet connection. ADSL and Cable were both out because our flat
isn’t in a connected area (we can’t even get Cable TV, but I don’t
miss it at all); luckily I know about ISDN and managed to, after close
to 5 hours on the phone with various people, track down the division
of BT that does residential ISDN. The line was installed on April 8th
and everything worked perfectly. The major differences I’ve noticed
so far culturally have been:
Cultural Attitudes
| North American | UK |
| - The customer is always right. |
- That’s not in rules, can’t do it. |
| - If someone doesn’t know something, they’ll tell you. |
- If they don’t know it, they’ll either make something up or
tell you it’s impossible. |
| - Efficiency is important. |
- Tradition is important. |
On the other hand, the UK has much better:
- Music
European’s play the best music. Classical is as likely as
cutting edge dance, trance or techno in a restaurant. Country
music?!? What’s that? Rap??! Never heard of it. :)
- Food
Now you’re average British fare is a pretty sad meal:
everything boiled into piles of different coloured mush or deep friend
to the same shade of tan. That would be really bad expect that the UK
has access to European food styles; unbelievably good Curry houses,
great Italian style cafes, French food, and many other continental
fares. Elizabeth is an excellent cook and all our meals have been
not only wonderful but I’m eating healthier than ever before
- Travel
It’s so easy here to hop on a plane or a train to a
different county. A whole new culture of adventures and experiences
is just hours away.
- Elizabeth
And of course most importantly, Elizabeth is here!!
Life in the UK does take a little adjusting to.. In my first week
here I broke a glass item a day in the micro dishwasher that passes of
a real dishwasher here. I also managed to fry a power supply; it’s
amazing just how much smoke can come out of something so small. After
that though, I seem to have gotten the hang of things here. I’m
really looking forward to my bed arriving because my feet hang off the
end of Elizabeth’s British bed *lol*.
Living with Elizabeth is turning out to be really easy and
comfortably. We have very similar habits and preferences (although we
do have slightly different sleep schedules). I’m not sure what else
to say; we’re prefect for each other.
All in all a really fun week. I’m very, very happy and look
forward to each new day with Elizabeth.
